Another great Bali camping spot is Bukit Asah. Bukit Asah is a little peninsula that juts out of the East Bali coast and overlooks the magnificent Virgin Beach. This is an official campground which has only opened up in the past couple years. It has had facilities installed and been landscaped into terraces for tent camping. There are also some good spots to park the camper and enjoy the spectacular views and easy access to the beach.
Another great thing about camping at Bukit Asah is it’s proximity to lots of different activities and sightseeing locations. As mentioned before it sits just above Virgin beach which is one of our favorite beaches in Bali. A wonderful stretch of beautiful sand and crystal clear water makes for a wonderful day at the beach. There are also local restaurants, beach chairs, restrooms and showers available to make the time more enjoyable.
Things to do in this area
One of the biggest draws to camping at Bukit Asah is it’s proximity to Virgin Beach. This is a great beach with beautiful sand and a smattering of restaurants and beach chairs along the sand.
Then just 45 minutes away is Penataran Lempuyang, the Heaven’s Gate temple. This has become one of Bali’s most popular photo spots, and as such can get a bit crowded. But if you are camped in Bukit Asah you can get up early and beat the crowds.
Tirta Gangga is only 25 minutes away. This amazing water palace was once the spiritual retreat of the local king.
Bukit Asah is also quite close (45 minutes) to another camping place, Bukit Surga. We often recommend combining a stay at Bukit Asah with a stay at Bukit Surga as you get to experience the warm beach environment around Virgin Beach as well as the cool upland environment of Bukit Surga.
Where to park
Bukit Asah is a very big property. Most people will drive to the end of the road where you will come to a parking lot and the office. That’s where you pay. But the area around the office is only used for tent camping and there is no good place to camp in the campervan. For the campervan I suggest, after you have paid just go back up the road and find a spot you like. This is one of my favorites but there are others including one beachside at Virgin beach (ask the staff).
Please note that in the dry season Bukit Asah will be brown and in the wet season it will be green so the pictures might look a bit different.
This spot has a great view but the privacy level varies depends on whether the area is busy or not.
The cost to stay
I have seen the rates change a bit here but never with any big difference. Here’s the latest prices:
